Your Agency Shouldn't Be a Hostage Situation: What Happens If Something Happens to Us?

It is the single most uncomfortable question a prospective client will ever ask an agency owner. Usually, they hesitate, clear their throat, and dance around the phrasing:

"Simon, we love the architecture. We love the proposal. But what happens if you get hit by a bus? What happens if you stop working, or if three years down the road we decide to move maintenance in-house?"

Most web shops give vague, corporate answers about "continuity plans" and "team redundancy."

At KohlerCode, we operate on a completely different premise. Here is exactly how we engineer client projects so that, in the worst-case scenario, any experienced developer on the planet can take over our work by tomorrow morning.

Before we write a line of code, we agree on the test the project has to pass: a developer who has never seen your system gets access on Monday morning and is productive by Tuesday. That is the standard. Not "we will always be here," but "you are never trapped if we are not."

Most agencies never run that test, because the honest answer would be uncomfortable. It is worth asking any provider you are considering. The answer tells you more about them than the portfolio does.

Every project ships with a written handover file, and we hand it over without being asked. It covers what the system does, how it is deployed and updated, every account involved and where the credentials sit, why each significant decision was made, and what we would do next.

It is written for the next engineer, not for us. If something happened to us tomorrow, that document is the first thing your new developer would read, and it assumes they know nothing about the project. A handover that needs a phone call to our team is not a handover.

Your domain, your server, your repository, your API keys and your third-party accounts are registered to you, not to us. We operate them. We do not own them, and we do not hold them. That includes the AI agents we deploy: they run on infrastructure dedicated to your company, not on a shared platform you cannot see into.

Your data leaves as ordinary, readable files. Backups run every day, and they are kept either on our servers or in your own storage, so a current copy is always in your hands. The engagement is monthly and can be cancelled at any time. Leaving is a message, not a negotiation.

We build on standard, widely understood technology, and we use open standards where they exist. Our agents reach your systems through the Model Context Protocol, for example, rather than through an integration only we can read. Your content and your records stay in ordinary databases and ordinary files.

We avoid anything where the only person who can understand the code is the person who wrote it. Where a project genuinely needs an unusual approach, the handover file says so and explains what the conventional alternative would have been, so the next developer can judge it for themselves.

That is the difference between a vendor and a hostage situation. The work stands on its own.

Some things cannot be put in a repository. The judgement that comes from twenty years of building these systems, the context of your business, and a working relationship that has already been through a few difficult weeks. None of that arrives in a zip file.

What does transfer is the system itself, the reasoning behind it, and the ability to keep it running without us. That is the most any agency can honestly offer, and we would rather state the limit than pretend it does not exist.
